From Migoti Mountain to Sussex: A Coffee Journey
In early 2024, our founders, Alice and Chris, journeyed to Migoti Mountain in Burundi—where they met with local farmers, hiked the steep red-soil trails, and tasted this exceptional coffee right at its source. So impressed by its potential, they reserved the lot months before the harvest had even finished.
That decision marked the beginning of an unforgettable journey: from remote highland farms to the Migoti Washing Station, through washed-out roads, export delays, and international shipping setbacks. Eight months later, the coffee finally arrived at our Sussex roastery. Imported directly from Migoti Coffee Company, this is more than a sourcing story—it’s a relationship grounded in trust, shared values, and a dedication to quality from seed to cup.
A Small Country with Big Coffee
Burundi may be one of East Africa’s smallest coffee-producing nations, but it's rich in the conditions that make truly exceptional coffee. With elevations ranging from 1,500 to 2,000 meters, heirloom Bourbon varietals, generous rainfall, and over 800,000 smallholder families—each cultivating just 150–200 trees—Burundi’s coffee landscape is both humble and extraordinary.
The Bourbon Advantage
Today, Arabica represents nearly 100% of Burundi’s national coffee output. Grown at high altitudes, the Bourbon variety from this region is renowned for its sweetness, bright acidity, full body, and distinctive notes of florals, citrus, spice, and wild complexity.
What’s in a Name?
“Migoti” is named after an indigenous tree species native to the area—and also the mountain where the Migoti team established their very first washing station.
Farming with Community and Purpose
The coffee trees on Migoti Mountain are owned by the local farming community. Cherries are harvested by hand and delivered daily to the washing station, where quality and traceability are paramount. These carefully processed lots consistently earn high cupping scores—making Migoti one of the most respected names in Burundi’s specialty coffee scene.
Try our Migoti Mountain and let us know what you taste—we think you’ll find the journey was worth every mile.
