Exceptional Coffee from Ethiopia’s Premier Growing Region

Worka Chelbesa is one of Ethiopia’s most renowned coffee-growing areas, situated in the Gedeb district of the Gedeo Zone. Known for its dense, semi-forested vegetation, this region provides ideal ecological conditions for cultivating high-quality coffee. Shade-grown coffee trees thrive alongside false banana plants, enhancing the coffee’s complexity and unique terroir.

At altitudes ranging from 1,950 to 2,200 meters, Worka Chelbesa coffee is cultivated by 763 dedicated farmers, who carefully handpick ripe cherries during the harvest season from November to January.

Innovative Processing for Outstanding Clarity

In 2019, SNAP Specialty Coffee established a cutting-edge wet mill in Danche, a small hamlet within Chelbesa Village, to enhance coffee quality. The wet mill features ceramic fermentation tanks, which play a crucial role in retaining heat and accelerating the fermentation process, leading to improved clarity in the cup.

The coffee undergoes a meticulous post-harvest process:

  • Fermentation: Red cherries are subjected to a 72-hour wet fermentation period, allowing for the development of complex flavors.
  • Soaking: After fermentation, the beans are soaked for one hour to refine their profile.
  • Drying: The beans are carefully dried on raised beds for 12 days, ensuring even moisture content and preserving delicate flavor notes.

  • Fully Washed: Showcasing bright acidity and clean, floral notes.

  • Anaerobic Natural: Producing intense, winey characteristics with bold fruitiness.
