Background

Rwamatamu Coffee Ltd is a family-owned business founded by Mukantwaza Laetitia and Rutaganda Gaston, who bring over 13 years of experience in the coffee industry. Established in 2015, Rwamatamu's Coffee aims not only for financial success but also to combat poverty in rural communities through sustainable coffee harvesting.

EDGE Visit

In April 2024, Chris and Alice, directors of EDGE Tea & Coffee, visited the family-run Rwamatamu Washing Station as part of their tour of East African coffee farms. During their visit, they met Bernice and Luke, who have taken over the estate's operations, continuing the legacy of Bernice’s parents. Alice was particularly impressed by the deep sense of respect and trust that forms the cornerstone of the Rwamatamu community.

Farm and Process

Located in the Western province of Rwanda, Rwamatamu’s coffee farm and washing station are nestled among the picturesque rolling hills of the Nyamasheke District, near Lake Kivu. The region's tropical highland climate, with temperatures averaging between 14 to 24°C and consistent rainfall, creates the perfect conditions for growing dense, flavourful Arabica coffee beans.

Rwamatamu Coffee Ltd owns 20 hectares of coffee plantation, harvesting its own cherries and sourcing additional cherries from affiliate cooperatives, local producers, and smallholder farmers. Each batch is carefully collected, processed, graded, and bagged separately to ensure the highest quality. This particular coffee is fully washed with spring water, but this washing station sun dries too.

Global Reach and Recognition

Rwamatamu Coffee has earned international acclaim, being sold in the USA and Sweden and achieving high rankings in the prestigious "Cup of Excellence" coffee competition.

Community and Values

Rwamatamu Coffee Ltd is deeply committed to making a positive social and economic impact on local farmer communities, with a particular focus on supporting women. Rwamatamu collaborates with local cooperatives where 80% of the employees are women. fact, Rwamatamu has its very own women produced lots, as they quote women as ‘the backbone of our society’. They strive to build strong, healthy relationships with the community by ensuring regular purchases of beans, investing in employee growth, and maintaining high-quality standards each year.
