Our Story

Edgcumbes  is an award-winning coffee roaster and tea merchant close to the historic town of Arundel based at the foot of the South Downs National Park. We have been roasting and blending since 1981 from beans and leaves imported  from single estates and cooperatives around the world.

Our coffee is hand roasted  daily because we believe that FRESH is always best. We are proud to produce unique, great tasting coffees for our customers – we only use top grade speciality beans. Provenance and decades of expertise are what makes the difference. Furthermore our teas are blended from leaves that have been grown by famers and producers who care about their crops, over many generations.

Edgcumbes is an independent family business going back three generations, supplying freshly roasted coffees and hand-blended loose-leaf tea, along with all the kit to make it with! Established in 1981 we have always believed in building strong relationships with the farmers , the coffee and tea enthusiasts at home as well as hospitality customers.

Why?

Because we believe fresh ALWAYS tastes better than commercially packaged products.

It is a true family affair and headed up by Alice and Christopher Rendle with help from their four sons (when they’re in town). They always seem very enthusiastic when a trip to origin is on the cards!

From our roots as a traditional wholesaler, trade and retail customers can now buy Edgcumbes products online, while people in Sussex can visit the Roastery, Café and Shop near Arundel, as well as our sister café ‘EDGE By The Sea’ on Littlehampton Seafront.

If you’re looking to learn a bit more about coffee you can also attend a range of fascinating courses run by our fully trained and knowledgeable team.

As you can tell, we’ve come a long way from our humble beginnings.

How did it all start?

Our story began about 40 years ago when Christopher’s Father returned to the UK after 20 years in Kolkata.

He was distraught to discover he couldn’t find his usual daily brew of high quality loose-leaf tea. So he sat at the kitchen table with a set of scales, and blended a batch of high quality Assam and Kenyan tea leaves to make a delicious everyday brew.

He called the blend “Rusper” after the West Sussex village where he grew up, and once the word got out he started to sell it to the local cafes & restaurants, and the company grew from there.

All our products have the same attention to detail, premium and delicious taste.

P.S. In case you’re wondering, the logo is the family crest that goes back three centuries, updated a bit for the modern age… and it’s actually a wolf…not a dog!
